Countries who have acted against glyphosate

Follow us on a journey! In the following months we will feature countries that have acted against glyphosate.

This week we feature Malta…

They were the only country at the European Commission review on the license extension of glyphosate to vote against it.

Leading by example, Malta has at least 25 of their local councils already banning the use of the non-selective herbicide glyphosate, also known as the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller. The next step for Malta will be a significant one. It aims to become the first European Union nation to enact a complete ban on the glyphosate.

The move towards a complete ban in the country is timely with the decision in June by the European Commission to extend the license of glyphosate for a further 18-months.

It was in a round table discussion of member states in June when Malta was the only country that chose to vote against the extension of the license. According to the Times of Malta, the Maltese government has now begun taking steps towards implementing a complete ban on glyphosate use across the whole country.
